Aubrey Williams, born in Georgetown, Guyana, showed early promise and interest in painting. As a trained agronomist, his work took him among the indigenous Warrau in the Guyanese interior.

Williams came to London in 1952 to paint, travelling Europe extensively and developing his painting skills.  In the early 1960s he began to exhibit widely to critical acclaim, but soon became marginalised as a Commonwealth artist. Increasingly he worked in Jamaica, then Florida. The large, abstract paintings made there in the 1980s include his three best known series: Olmec-Maya, Shostakovich and Cosmos.

Williams’s work features globally in leading public and private collections. The Whitechapel Gallery held a major solo exhibition in 1998.Aubrey Williams is represented in the UK by October Gallery
