Bettina von Zwehl was born in Munich and lives and works in London. She is known internationally for her photographic portraiture through which she explores the subtleties of the human profile.

After receiving her BA in Photography from the London College of Printing, von Zwehl began making portraits during her MA in Fine Art Photography at the Royal College of Art. Specialising in 19th century studio methodology, her practice is an ongoing enquiry into the possibilities of portraiture and the descriptive power of the format.

Bettina von Zwehl has undertaken residencies at the Victoria and Albert Museum (2011), The Freud Museum (2014) and Bohusläns Museum, Sweden (2015). Her work is in the collections of the Arts Council, British Council, National Portrait Gallery, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
