Bill Woodrow Bio
Bill Woodrow, born in 1948 in Oxfordshire, UK, is a British sculptor, draughtsman and printmaker.
Woodrow’s sculpture is characterised by his use of domestic and urban objects to make sculptures in which the original identity of his materials is still evident. Since the late 1980s he has expanded his range of materials to include welded steel and cast bronze.
Though his drawings and prints are related to his sculptural practice, in terms of their imagery and ideas, they are made by Woodrow for their own sake and not as preparation for other works. In these Woodrow often combines plant, animal and human forms with landscape and abstract elements.
Bill Woodrow studied at Winchester School of Arts (1967-1968) and at St. Martin’s School of Art, London (1968-1971) before spending a year at Chelsea School of Art, London. His first solo exhibition was at the Whitechapel Gallery, London in 1972. In the early 1980s he represented Britain at Biennales in Sydney (1982), Paris (1982, 1985) and Sâo Paulo (1983) and in1986 Bill Woodrow was shortlisted for the Turner Prize, Tate Gallery.
