Chris Levine Bio
Chris Levine, born in Canada in 1960, is a light artist who works through a range of mediums including photography, performance, film and installation, and across many fields including fine art, fashion and music. His multi-disciplinary approach harnesses an array of technology, with the aim of revealing the ways in which light is fundamental to human experience. Levine has famously created a number of portraits including ‘the Lightness of Being’ and ‘Equanimity’, both of Queen Elizabeth II. ‘Equanimity’ was commissioned by the Jersey Heritage Trust in 2004 and on 1 June 2012 a Jersey £100 note, that includes that portrait, was issued to commemorate the Monarch’s Diamond Jubilee. The artist has also created a portrait to commemorate the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday, with sale proceeds raising funds for the victims of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. Chris Levine has worked with many collaborators including Massive Attack, Grace Jones and Asprey Jewellers, and has an ongoing collaborative relationship with the Eden Project. He has staged light performances and exhibitions internationally including at Radio City in New York commissioned by MoMA (US), The Royal Opera House (UK), and MATE museum in Lima (PE).
Chris Levine lives and works in the UK.
