Paul Hill is a fine art photographer, author and lecturer. He initially established his reputation in the 1960s as an award-winning photojournalist before moving towards a fine art practice in the 1970s.

During his transition to fine art photography, Hill began to focus on creating multifaceted psychological documents. His images during this period were often interested in transforming the ordinary to the extra-ordinary, and culminated in surreal compositions.

Hill has been teaching photography since the 1970s. In 1976, with his wife Angela, he established Britain’s first residential photography workshop, The Photographer’s Place. In 1996, he set up one of the UK’s first MAs in Photography. Hill has exhibited internationally and co-authored numerous books. His works are held in public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; National Media Museum, Bradford; Arts Council, the Government Art Collection, Museum of Modern Art, Stockholm, Australian National Gallery and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. A Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, he was awarded an MBE for services to photography in 1994, and honorary doctorates of art by Derby and De Montfort universities.

The Paul Hill/Photographer’s Place Archive is held by Birmingham City Archives.
